Description

N. Alba
White. Yellow stamens
This is the Wild Water Lily which grows in lakes and sluggish rivers, and there it should remain. Buy one only if you need a plant for a deep and very large pond. Blooms are cup-shaped and the leaves are large.

N. 'Attraction'

Red flecked with white. Golden stamens

Wide-spreading, so this free-flowering Water Lily needs a large pond. The flowers on a young plant may be quite small and pale pink, but on a mature specimen they are 9 in. rich red beauties.

N. 'Charles De Meurville'

Wine red -- darkens with age. Golden stamens

A very vigorous variety noted for its enormous leaves and its early flowering habit. The 9-10 in. blooms open flat, each red petal being tipped and streaked with white.

N. 'Colossea'
Blush pink -- fades to white with age. Golden stamens
The most vigorous pink Water Lily which will grow in ponds or lakes 5-6 ft deep. The 9 in. fragrant blooms are borne over a long period, The leaves are large and dark green.
N. 'Escarboucle'
Rich red -- outer petals paler than inner ones. Golden stamens
The experts will tell you that this is probably the best red of all, but it does need plenty of space and a planting depth of at least 2 ft. Flowers up to 1 ft across -- prolific, reliable and fragrant.

N. 'Gladstoniana'
White. Golden stamens
Strictly one for the large pond or lake -- a planting depth of 2 ft is necessary and so is an extensive water surface. Broad-petalled flowers are up to 1 ft across. Wavy-edged leaves.

N. Marliacea 'Carnea'
Pale pink. Golden stamens. May appear almost white
The most widely-grown pink Water Lily. Easy and free-flowering with large (8 in,) fragrant blooms. Sometimes classed as 'Medium', but not a plant for average-sized ponds. Spread 6 ft.

N. Marliacea 'Chromatella'
Canary yellow, Yellow stamens. Outermost petals sometimes tinged pink
The 7 in. wide flowers are bowl-shaped with incurved broad petals -- the common name 'Golden Cup' is appropriate. Leaves are splashed with brown. Reliable and free-flowering. Very popular.
N. 'Mrs Richmond'
Pink -- inner petals turn red with age. Golden stamens
The globular blooms are large (9 in.) with broad petals -- the sepals the base are white. Leaves are pale green. A free-flowering and spreading variety suited only to a large pond

N. Tuberosa 'Richardsonii'
White. Yellow stamens
A giant which needs to be in about 3 ft of water or more -- a plant to admire in lakes but not one for the home pond. The globular flowers appear unusually early in the season
